Bug Description

This bug is present in both 11.04 and 11.10 versions of Ubuntu. Each version contains a package called "Unity" which seems to disable the usable desktop and replaces it with something that looks like a broken smartphone. Ubuntu will remain unusable until this bug is removed. Please assign the highest possible priority.

There are official derivatives that do not use Unity, such as kubuntu. Ubuntu has Unity as its default interface, and they are not going to change this based on this bug report. Marking as invalid.

Open hostility towards the user community is worsening the effects of this bug.

One of the side effects of Bug 886305 is that existing users are abandoning the Ubuntu platform in large numbers. This directly impacts Bug 1.

Uhm.. nope. Unity is a great way to access applications and files. Unity needs some improvements, but I hope it is here to stay!

Wow, I thought everyone had got over Unity-hating like 6 months ago.

Should a new bug be reported regarding that? I'd say GNOME Shell would also be affected.

I can't reproduce this issue. Unity works great for me!

Unity is a tool. It is a nice option, but it is not the best tool for all jobs. Unfortunately, it seems to have also become a religion to some people, and that is upsetting to those of us that do not like it. Having a tablet interface on a power desktop is just not helpful to a lot of people. And, marking this bug as invalid is just going to infuriate a LOT of people. However, I am not changing it, because it seems that infuriation is actually a goal of a lot of other people. Perhaps that is another bug. It seems to me that openly deriding user opinions goes against what Ubuntu was all about when I joined...

Honestly: I find neither Gnome 3 nor Unity to push Ubuntu or Linux much further on the desktop. For me both are not intuitive although I have seen a lot of different GUIs and Desktop environments and consider myself being flexible in adopting to new/other environments.

Since 10.10 I tested all the major desktop environments. Since I tested them the first time, I think XFCE developed best. That impression is confirmed by many peers currently considering move to Xubuntu. Others moved to Mint which I do also consider as a quite good distro. I personally considered removing all my Gnome Panels on my 10.04 work machine and using the Gnome Desktop in combination with AWN (which I personally prefer over Cairo Dock). The interesting thing: From the ground idea Unity is not so far away from my optimum desktop. There are good ideas and I appreciate to have yet another choice for my desktop environment.

I always was convinced that Unity is planned to be configurable.

My major critics: Why the hack switch to unity as primary desktop environment when it is still that beta stadium?!?
Ubuntu has switched to Unity too early!

My minor critics: I consider other issues or focus points more important than introducing yet another desktop environment. Canonical could also have decided to help developing XFCE and choose that as further primary desktop environment for Ubuntu. It is a well known problem of the whole Linux community that sometimes forces should be united rather than everybody is doing his own stuff.

All that said: I can understand the decision to develop an own desktop environment as Gnome 3 is not moving into the right direction IMHO.

"Unity makes Ubuntu unusable" is definitely not true. I do miss a lot of configuration options and I there is a lot of behaviour that I find inefficient. But I am a productivity optimizing guy and not the standard user. A standard home user will be served well enough with Unity.
