Bug Description

I have found 3 issues with the new hardware database collection module:
1) When I told it to run the collection submission process, it informed me that
I needed to install a package. Why doesn't it simply ask me if I'd like to
install this package and automatically take me into Synaptic to download it? I
knew what to do to get it, but this process could be more user
friendly-streamlined/automated.
2) There are numerous spelling errors on the HWDB collection description:
    a. Ubuntu should be capitalized like "Ubuntu" not "ubuntu".
    b. First sentence should read "This is the Ubuntu hardware database
collection tool. It obtains all possible data about your hardware, performs
certain self-tests, and asks you some questions about the autodetected values.
    c. I believe "webbased" should be changed to "web-based" or "web based".
    d. "ressource" misspelled...should be "resource".
    e. Put a period after "hardware" in the Online Submission section to form a
complete sentence.
    f. Change Improvement section text to read "Based on the collected data,
fine tuning for autodetection and improvements in hardware support can be
facilitated with Ubuntu developers. If you open this application in the future,
it will direct you to the online data of your machine.

Sorry if I sound harsh...and if I made any spelling errors ;) Since I have
little knowledge of programming, I wanted to assist Ubuntu with documentation
and other areas of development.

Sorry, I forgot the most important bug #6763. The module failed to respond when I
selected "Forward" to proceed. I had to cancel the process. This has the
potential to be a valuable asset to Ubuntu...keep up the good work.

thanks for the text corrections, i will put them in the next update (i'm not a
native english speaker, so all corrections are very welcome).
the gui part is not ready yet, so it didnt do more then it should currently.
here is a little overview how the whole thing will work:
http://www.grawert.net/hwdb_schema.png

it should be in a usable state until 02 mar 2005.

What an awesome tool! I'm glad that users will have the option to
send their hardware information. Some people may not want to
participate for privacy or other reasons, so at least they are given
a choice. Windoze just takes your info. regardless of what you
want. I'm glad to help with any English documentation. Just let me
know what Ubuntu developers need. My wife can also assist with any
Japanese translations/projects (she's Japanese). We are moving back
to Japan from the U.S. in May, so we will help as time permits over
the next few months.

I've just reviewed the updated packages. Here are my comments:
1. The first section title appears to be "cut-off"...maybe there's just a
problem with line spacing.
2. You may not need to capitalize "ubuntu"; it's not capitalized in other parts
of the OS. Sorry!
3. Please place a comma (,) after self-tests in the first section.
4. Here's a rewrite of the Improvement section:
"Developers utilize the collected data to fine tune autodetection and improve
ubuntu hardware support. By submitting your hardware information to the central
ubuntu database,(put a comma here) you will have online access to your data in
the future. No personal user information will be collected or transmitted
through this process."
5. Do you need a personal privacy statement? Does the user need to
review/agree with some sort of agreement? I'm not sure of legal implications
with ubuntu or Canonical Ltd???
Looking good!

Why is the hwdb-client package located in the unsupported repository? I had to change my settings
in 'sources.list' to add the repository containing hwdb-client. A new user would have a difficult
time figuring out how to get the hwdb-client package. If possible, please move it to the main
repository.

Because it isn't officially released yet.

Will it be part of 5.04? If not, then the button that invokes it should probably
be removed from the Device Manager.

Graphics boo-boo with hwdb collection

I've attached a screenshot that shows a small alignment problem with the
graphics module of the hwdb collector. The refresh rate is covered by a line.
Also, I would recommend a way for the hwdb-client to test 3d graphics support.
I still cannot get ATI fglrx 3d support to work with my AMD64 laptop. Mesa
libs seem to work fine, but proprietary ATI drivers appear to have problems.
I've used synaptic to obtain the restricted modules...do I need to install them
or is synaptic supposed to complete installation and setup?

thank you for pointing it out, i'm aware of this, its caused by the usage of rtf
text in the subtitle where it is not possible to force the font size yet, it
will be solved before the release.
the 3D support test is planned, but wont be in hoary yet, rather a breezy
feature, sorry but i'm getting to short of time to implement new features a week
before final freeze.

The original reporter didn't mention what version of Ubuntu he was using but most likely it's not supported anymore. Please retest it and reopen this bug if this is still an issue in a later version of Ubuntu.
