Email alerts should be implemented if a display goes offline for more then XX minutes, fatal error on clients, etc... This was the admin will known when something is going wrong before it becomes a problem.

We've been talking about this.

What we propose is an extensible php file on the server that is called periodically by cron or Scheduled Tasks etc that wakes and performs background maintenance tasks.

This could easily be extended to support checking if the clients are connecting to the webservice correctly. The client would need to support sending its update interval back to the server so that false positives are not generated.
