Mirror

Registered by Victor Westmann

This blueprint has been superseded. See the newer blueprint "Inkscape should support symmetrical drawing allowing the user to create symmetrical logos." for updated plans.

It would be awesome if Inkscape could implement a mirror feature. The way it should work is described in the link. It would be awesome if the user could also choose to use 1, 2, 4, 6, x mirrors to build a kaleidoscope like draw. Thank you.

[2011-08-31 ~suv] The requested feature is basically possible with Inkscape:

1) Basic tutorial for mirrored drawing:
<http://simarilius.wordpress.com/2006/08/26/mirror-mirror-on-the-wall/>

2) Even the kaleidoscope like drawing is possible, a friendly GUI is missing though (to create the cloned layers or to choose from a preset of symmetries):
See this topic in the InkscapeForum (cloned layers, flipped and rotated - like a kaleidoscope):
<http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3300>
Additional templates can be found here:
<http://www.openclipart.org/search/?query=kaleidoscope>

More complex mirror symmetries could be created with the 'Tiled Clones…' dialog.
<http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Tiles-Symmetries.html>

3) There exists an experimental live path effect (LPE) to mirror paths, but it is not enabled by default and hasn't been worked on since it was created (AFAIU part of the set of LPEs for the geometric tools).

IMHO this blueprint is a duplicate of the earlier filed
<https://blueprints.launchpad.net/inkscape/+spec/symmetrical-drawing>
and does not contain additional details AFAICT.

@JazzyNico - is it possible to merge blueprints?

[2011-11-23 jazzynico] @~suv - I'm marked this one as superseded. Unfortunately, there's no link in the other report, and thus it's difficult to know there's a duplicate.
