automatic detection of network interface

Registered by Cedynamix

It will be interesting to see what network interface is activated Gufw (eth0, wlan0, ...). The must be to make this automatic detection for people travelling and avoid having to manually change the active network connection.

Whiteboard

As Far As I Know, ufw works using iptables, this means the rules apply to all the interfaces. Am I correct?

Olivier Guéry : Maybe, I don’t want the same rules if I’m with ethernet at my home or wifi in the street. It’s a big limitation of firestarter.

Anakin Starkiller : Then, there should be some profiles to configure UFW. Each profile stores different iptable rules. UFW should detect when the active interface change (eth0 to ath0/wlan0). Maybe a common profile for all the rules in common would be useful. I gave up Firestarter since it does not support multiple interfaces. It would be great if it was done properly in UFW... see https://blueprints.launchpad.net/gui-ufw/+spec/load-save-rulesets

Vadim Peretokin : This makes sense. Combined with the load-save-rulesets blueprint and some NetworkManager dbus integration, this could be possible to do.

Pascal Huisman : To keep it very simple. Have the firewall on/off on wlan (hotel network), PPP (some GPRS/3G network). Off for eth (usually behind router/proxy/nat), tap and tun. Or integrate it as some plugin in network manager.

Marcos: Sorry, Gufw can't do it now, maybe in the future :) Thanks by your idea ;) But the load-save-rulesets can solved this, isn't?
