After changing to the ati driver in xorg.conf the problem seams to desapear so it must be a problem in the fglrx driver

Also have this kernel panic... been years since i haven't got one.

strangly mine occured when i added to /etc/X11/xorg.conf
to my section device for driver fglrx.

# === Video Overlay for the Xv extension ===
# Option "VideoOverlay" "off"
# === OpenGL Overlay ===
# Note: When OpenGL Overlay is enabled, Video Overlay
# will be disabled automatically
# Option "OpenGLOverlay" "on"

I can boot X but i launch xine, it creates almost immediately a kernel panic.
switching the values above on/off doesn;t create the issue

just adding i used to have these options with a compiled fglrx under debian.
now i used kubuntu dapper and these option now do panic the kernel.

so i presumed linked to driver

I get a kernel panic while gnome is loading. I see the splash screen, a few apps load, then when nautilus draws the desktop I get a kernel panic. Only happens with fglrx. This has persisted for about 3 months now; I've blogged about it here and a lot of people hit this page, so it might be a fairly common problem:
http://philisoft.com/blog/vicious-kernel-panic-in-ubuntu-dapper-related-to-nautilus/

The workaround is from the CLI to move my wallpapers where nautilus can't find them, so it can't draw my wallpaper when I log in. Then, if I move the wallpapers back and have nautilus draw the desktop, it's fine. There's only a panic when logging in.

I've been using this computer and video card for the longest time on Ubuntu, and even successfully on Dapper, so this problem did not always exist, but was introduced at some point in Dapper development.

For those having troubles with ATI based cards, try adding this to your Xorg.conf:

Option "KernelModuleParm" "agplock=0"

I found that it completely removed all my random lockups with my laptop (X600 based), especially when it was doing any 3D work or running Xgl.

A full list of other options are available here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=150854

Feedback on how effective this line is may assist the Ubuntu team to add some stability with ATI cards.

Can we assume from the lack of further responses that Tim's solution fixed the issue? Please give feedback here.
