/media mount points not created on demand?

Bug #14879 reported by Jay Camp

Bug Description

The following were created on a fresh install from about a month ago:

/media/floppy -> /media/floppy0
/media/cdrom -> null

Automounting fails due the missing cdrom0 directory. According to this previous
bug (#2467), pmount should create the directories on the fly, but in my case
it's not.

Another possible related bug: #1859

pmount does create required mount points if necessary; however, CD-ROMs are in
/etc/fstab, thus pmount behaves exactly like mount (which does not create
directories).

Indeed, this seems to be the very same bug. Colin, since this is an installer
bug, can you please take a look at it? Thanks!

Is there any reason why it's listed in /etc/fstab then since HAL is going to
manage it? Seems like the less dynamic info in fstab the better (and pmount
would then manage the creation of mount points).

This is mainly for historical reasons. However, one advantage of having the
drives in /etc/fstab is that you see icons for the CD-ROMs even if there is no
CD in the drive, so I guess we should keep it that way.

Nautilus now displays the drives that HAL says exists instead of relying on
what's in fstab, so the issue Martin raised is resolved. Wouldn't it be best to
try and keep as much static information like this out of fstab for when hardware
gets switched around. Perhaps this should be a separate bug.

I think I fixed this some time ago (for breezy). Please do reopen this bug if it recurs.
