When did it start to happen? Does it happen all the time? Or only sometimes. It
seems to work on my system so any help in reproducing is welcome :)

Huuu, can't remember exactly, a few days ago, sometime last week after an update...

So far, it does it all the time.
I noticed that if I click on the arrow (the real one), then the dummy one above
it, goes away and teh windows then become "clean", like it should be.
Also, I noticed something that may give you a clue (?) : still in the
update-manager, when you click on the "relaod" button in the top right corner,
you get a similar window, with a progress bar, while it's downloading the
repositories index files( whatever you call them ;o). Well, this windows is
clean, it doesn't show the problem. I hit the reload button many times just to
check , and it never show the problem.
Also, in Synaptic this time, when you install something and download the
packages, you also get a similar window. Well, this is one is also clean, every
time.
Maybe you can look at the code of these 3 windows, to compare them ??

I cannot reproduce this bug on my system either. But looking at that screenshot
Vincent doesn't seem to be using the default Ubuntu theme (which is what I'm
currently using on Hoary). Could this extra arrow be a problem with a
particuliar theme/icons set?

The theme ? Ah yes, didn't think of that. Can themes really do such strange things ?
If they did, why does it only happen on this windows, and not with the other
two, similar windows I mentionned ?
Also, it's the "clearlooks" theme, which uses the normal Gnome icons.
But anyway, hte problem seems to go away by itself everytime the synaptic or the
update-manager are updated, and if you nobody elese sees the problem....may not
worth wasting time on it.. let's forgot about it for now.
After all, once Hoary is released, nobody will use the update- manager, or only
once or twice, for security fixes ?
Let's close this bug for now... there are many, more annoying ones to fix in the
todo list ! :-/

Hi Michael,

I haven't seen this bug reappear for quite some time now, and since it seems I
am the only one who ever experienced it, maybe you could just close this bug...
the less bugs the merrier isn't it ?! ;-)

I have seen this even in dapper, but it will be go away when update-manager
makes use of the improved python-apt based infrastructure.
