Backport of unity from Quantal to Precise
PPA description
This PPA provides a backport for Unity 6.x (for 12.10 / Quantal) to 12.04.
Unity 6.x provides ample amounts of fixes, performance improvements and new
features. Quite importantly, this huge performance improvement is included:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/988079
This fix (actually, a huge collection of fixes!) improves the performance of Unity-3D (e.g. for moving windows) with low-end 3D cards. e.g. Geforce 6 with Nouveau driver and relaxes the 3D frame rate regressions caused by Unity.
It is now also included in the proposed update unity-0.16 for Precise, so if you depend on a stable Unity use unity-0.16 from precise-proposed.
This PPA may cause stability issues (e.g. Xorg crashing to the point that
one either needs to reboot or log in remotely and run killall -0 Xorg) with
Nouveau, so be sure to use the blob from Nvidia (with all its drawbacks,
but also the improved performance if you have an Nvidia card and have
see Xorg behaving strange.
There appears to be some bug in this ppa (or my setup) regarding installing this version of unity-lens-applications using apt-get/aptitude, so it had to be installed using dpkg...:
For installing the unity from this ppa, you use:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:benkai/precise-unity-backport
sudo apt-get update
sudo aptitude remove unity-lens-applications
sudo aptitude install unity
wget http://ppa.launchpad.net/benkai/precise-unity-backport/ubuntu/pool/main/u/unity-lens-applications/unity-lens-applications_6.4.0-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb or
wget http://ppa.launchpad.net/benkai/precise-unity-backport/ubuntu/pool/main/u/unity-lens-applications/unity-lens-applications_6.4.0-0ubuntu2_i386.deb
sudo dpkg -i unity-lens-applications_6.4.0-0ubuntu2_*.deb
To revert your system back to Unity-5.x for 12.04, remove this PPA from /etc/apt/sources.list.d, and run:
apt-get upgrade && dpkg -r unity && aptitude install unity.
Do not accept the first solution of aptitude to remove other random packages
by answering with "n" to the first question. The second proposal of aptitude should be to downgrade the remaining unity packages, which you should accept.
Then log-out and then log-in again.
Adding this PPA to your system
You can update your system with unsupported packages from this untrusted PPA by adding ppa:benkai/precise-unity-backport to your system's Software Sources. (Read about installing)
