Ubuntu frequently does not have the latest release of Digikam. This PPA will (assuming Digikam's dependencies don't cause too much trouble).

Adding this PPA to your system

You can update your system with unsupported packages from this untrusted PPA by adding ppa:awauck/digikam-latest to your system's Software Sources. (Read about installing) 

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:awauck/digikam-latest
sudo apt update
