Fix all APIs so any IP is represented as a string

Some IPs are passed as common.IP objects, while some are expected as strings, which leads to a lot of confusion. Instead, just use strings for all IPs int eh API and use the IP object inside the functions only (meaning we should return any IPs as strings also)
