Slim down Xubuntu sessions for Karmic

Registered by Jannis Pohlmann on 2009-05-13

There have been a few articles on the web about Xubuntu being more heavy than other distros based on Xfce. We want to discuss and find ways to reduce the memory usage and login time of the default Xubuntu session for Karmic.

I've noticed that just by removing the xubuntu customizations, themes, artwork and leaving it to the xfce default setup and look, the memory usage in my system came down a lot and is much faster.

To help the developers out, I have found two articles about slim xfce sessions by distrowatch. The first one is comparing Xubuntu 9.04 with Debain 5 + Xfce. As you we will see, Xubuntu is much heavier and slower.

The next article is comparing Xubuntu 9.04 with Debain 5 + Xfce and Ubuntu minimal + Xfce. As you will see, Ubuntu + Xfce is about the same speed and as light as Debian + Xfce.
