Switch display On and Off via commands sent over SVGA

Registered by Matthew Holder

This blueprint has been superseded. See the newer blueprint "Execute shell command" for updated plans.

It is possible to switch displays On and Off via a signal sent through the VGA (and HDMI) cable. This feature links nicely with the RS232 control blueprint.

This feature would be excellent, as a large proportion of TV's with builtin VGA (HDMI) ports support these signals

Whiteboard

Alex H: Thanks for the suggestion. I'll bear it in mind. I'm guessing though that this will require low level access to the hardware (possibly at video driver level) which will be very difficult to do in a cross-platform way (ie on Linux, Windows, Mac). If you've got any documentation on how that works I'd be interested to see it?

Matthew:
Suggests xrandr and NirCmd http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd.html

Greg: Providing support to execute commands in Xibo client can cover this, though if xrandr/NirCmd work than likely (for windows, at least) Windows Power management will work. See https://blueprints.launchpad.net/xibo/+spec/power-management
