Support for partial/interrupted/resumed VM builds

Given how long it can take to build a VM, it would be nice to be able to interrupt builds and resume them later. This feature could also be used if you wanted to build a number of VMs that were all similar up to a certain stage of the building. If nothing else, this feature would be helpful for developers and would remove (or alleviate) the burden of long build-test cycles.
