Wallpaper Contest for Trusty Tahr

Registered by amjjawad 

On the previous cycle (Saucy), we have discussed the possibility to have a Wallpaper Contest - http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2013/07/ubuntu-13-10-wallpaper-contest-kicks-off - and Lubuntu too has the same thing (not sure about other flavours like Xubuntu?!) but we had no time to carry on with that on Saucy Cycle (13.10). However, we DO HAVE all the time for this cycle to go on with this idea.

Let's discuss it here :)

Whiteboard

[amjjawad] Marked as "Needs Infrastructure" because we do need volunteers to contribute to this contest. Hope someone to step in soon :)

This one is approved already.
@Alfredo Hernández
Kindly change the direction to 'Approved' :)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

[aldomann] We're going to use the wiki for the contest, as it gives us total control of it. Also, most of our users also use Launchpad.net or have a Ubuntu One account.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

[amjjawad][RE: aldomann] any good reason why do we have to use the Wiki? keep in mind that this contest shouldn't be restricted to members and/or users of Ubuntu GNOME but 'everyone' who might be interested to join. Not to mention, most of the 'users' don't really have Launchpad Account and they 'don't know' how to edit the Wiki Pages and probably have never done this before. The idea is to have as many submission as possible - correct me please if I am wrong :)
However, that is of course your area ;) I do have already 4 sub-teams to worry about :D
------------------------------------------------------------------------

[aldomann][RE:amjjawad] We've discussed it with Satyajit and you are right. We're using Flickr. You need a Yahoo account, but submitting the wallpapers is a piece of cake.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
[amjjawad] don't you guys think we should have publish this on our website or Social Media channels instead of including a link for: http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2014/01/ubuntu-gnome-14-04-wallpaper-contest ??? OMG Ubuntu is not part of Ubuntu GNOME Community and while I appreciate their help to spread the word, it is our job to publish that on our channels :) it happened. That is okay. It was the first time and failure to do things as perfect as possible is very much expected. But please, let's avoid that 'next time' and let's improve our internal communications, shall we?

------------------------------------------------------------------------
[satyajit] I had shared it myself on Google+. I don't know who manages the Ubuntu GNOME page on G+. May be he can share?

------------------------------------------------------------------------
[aldomann] Yeah, Ali. I agree, this is a bit of experimenting (the first time for most of us collaborating in such a big team). We definitely need to improve our internal communications (i.e., internal meetings) :P
------------------------------------------------------------------------

[amjjawad] [RE: satyajit] I am the founder of Ubuntu GNOME Marketing and Communications Team and the manager of each and every Social Media Channel for Ubuntu GNOME and also Website Admin for our website :)
You should have taken a look at: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/GettingInvolved/WhoWeAre and I see you did add yourself so how come you didn't check that :D
No problem. No, you know. Also, you can always ask on the mailing list ;)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

[amjjawad] [RE: aldomann] +1
Well said, brother. This is what I am expecting from you ;)
I have no real problem except I don't really like the idea to depend on some external websites that share our news which we should have do. I mean, I don't want anyone to do our job if you know what I mean.
Never too late. Could you please send me all the details related to 'The Wallpaper Contest' so that I add it to our website?
Thank you :)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

[aldomann][RE: amjjawad]
Satyajit is the man behind the contest :D
------------------------------------------------------------------------

[amjjawad] Haha, but you're the Team Leader :P
------------------------------------------------------------------------

[aldomann][RE: amjjawad]
We first wanted to use the Wiki as the submission page, then we changed for Flickr. All the walls already submitted to the wiki also participate.

Now, the info: This is the link to the contest http://www.flickr.com/groups/2484760@N20/, the deadline is on 27th of February (so we can pick a winner; for future contests we shall use a public poll), and the rules are these https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/Artwork/Trusty/CommunityWallpapers .
------------------------------------------------------------------------

[amjjawad] for the next cycle, there should be no mistakes whatsoever :D I am sure we have learned from this as our very first Wallpaper Contest.
Now, why 27th of Feb? that is too much. If we have already enough wallpapers to choose from, I see no reason to extend that to the end of Feb :) Just a thought ;)

@aldomann
I couldn't open the link: http://www.flickr.com/groups/2484760@N20

Can you please email that to me as a text not a link? thank you!
------------------------------------------------------------------------

[aldomann] At first we thought we should have a long period of submission, just in case we couldn't reach all the desired audience. I'm glad we were absolutely wrong, we've already had tons of submissions. The deadline could be this very week if Satyajit is fine with it.

About the link, try this one: http://www.flickr.com/groups/2484760@N20/pool/ (I don't know how to post it as plain text here in the whiteboard).

PS. I'm sure for the next release the coordination between our teams will be optimal ;)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

[amjjawad] [RE: aldomann]
1- Then we need to change the deadline and AFAIK, [satyajit] is on leave for 2 weeks so if we shall wait for him, I guess that will take us to 27th of Feb eventually. What I have in mind is to finish everything related to this contest before 1st of March :) Xubuntu team for example had done it already and I know, we need more time to as organized as them but just saying that we need to finish this earlier.

2- I don't want you to post it here :D I asked to send it via 'email' to me but since we're going to change the deadline, I guess there is no need for that :)

3- Yes. Next Cycle, things should be different, hopefully :)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

[satyajit] There are [[1,002 wallpapers]] submitted via the flickr page and
[[34 wallpapers]] via the wiki.

I discarded a lot of wallpapers. Now the wallpaper count in Flickr is
159. I discarded the following walls as per:

1. Gray-scale wallpapers
2. Busy wallpapers (our guidelines say we need soft focused
wallpapers, there might still be busy ones)
3. Incorrect aspect ratio (lots of submitted wallpapers were portrait)
4. Tried to keep only a few walls from users who submitted a huge amount
5. Plain wallpapers with something drawn on them
6. People's faces
7. Wallpapers which have something written on it
8. Wallpapers with low exposure, making them look almost black

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/Artwork/Trusty/CommunityWallpapers/Submissions
(35 wallpapers)

http://www.flickr.com/groups/2484760@N20/pool (158 wallpapers)

Thank you!
------------------------------------------------------------------------

[amjjawad] Well done and great job with the elimination process :)
Time now for Phase 2 and I'd say:

[[10 Wallpapers]] to be selected and make it to Ubuntu GNOME 14.04

What do you think?
------------------------------------------------------------------------

[amjjawad] The semi-final step: http://ubuntugnome.org/poll-community-wallpaper-contest/

This blueprint will soon be marked as implemented :)

Thank you everyone!
