This should avoid data loss upon X restart or system crashes by performing save states of X applications and files before X restart, or regularlry saving state of user specified applications.

Please add more detail to this spec; implementing a full auto-save-state of all the various applications available for Ubuntu is a rather huge task, so the concept needs to be a lot more fleshed out. One thing to consider is to limit the focus to a specific set of applications, since these apps will need to be able to handle a trigger to let them know to save state.
