X configuration utility is needed
When a user plugs his laptop into his new monitor there must be some easy way to probe the resolution of the monitor and configure whether it is a desktop clone or an extended desktop. This is something that is essential for desktop and laptop users

2007-08-17 bryce: xrandr 1.2 has been added in Gutsy which provides monitor hotplugging for -intel chipsets. Please experiment with this and determine where improvements are needed, and flesh out the spec's wiki link accordingly. (I believe the usability of this could be improved, but some conceptualization will be needed to determine what changes would help.) Other drivers will come with xrandr 1.2 support in a matter of course.
2008-04-25 bryce: Implemented. The new Screen Resolution tool released in Hardy provides this capability.
