Universal Proxy Settings

Registered by Yaakov Nemoy

Provide a simple way for all programs to use the same proxy server settings. Ideally this would involve modifying the network stack. It isn't exciting, but would be very welcome in any corporate/educational environment.

Whiteboard

This would be a great feature indeed. From http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/3771/:

"Currently if you need to setup a proxy in Ubuntu you must configure it in three different areas (that I know of, possibly more). First you must set the proxy settings under System> Preferences> Network Proxy. Then if you want to use a package manager you must change it under System> Administration> Synaptic Package Manager> Settings> Preferences> Network. Finally if you wish to use a web browser like Firefox you must set the proxy up for that individual application.

For those who use a laptop (like myself) and bring it to work, they must authenticate against a proxy so that is three places to enter in the exact same information. Then when they bring their laptop home where there is no proxy they must re change all the proxy settings above. As you see this can be very tedious."

Also see http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/5327/.

Basically there is a two-step process for optimal user experience. First, create a universal proxy mechanism. Second, allow this proxy setting to be applied to only specific profiles/connections in network-manager for users who only have a proxy at one location but switch back and forth often.
