Auto-selection of kernel architecture (i386/686)
The 386 kernel runs in every Intel/Amd cpu , but in exchange it doesn´t takes advantage of all cpu´s instructions , also some cpu´s have issues running the 386 kernel, so the solution would be during the Ubuntu-386 instalation , the installer run a script that would detect the CPU the computer has , which is the right kernel for it , and mark it for instalation using apt-get with online repositories (which would be better than fit all kernels in a single cd) , for thoose who aren´t aware of the "right kernel" story poffy writed an howto at http://

Whiteboard
This has been implemented in Ubuntu since before its inception, inherited from Debian. The only catch is that there isn't enough room on the single CD to provide more than one kernel flavour. If you use the DVD or install over the network, the most appropriate kernel is already selected for you. Note that there is also a proposal for Edgy under consideration to use the -686 kernel on the live CD, which would solve this issue for the desktop case. -mdz, 2006-07-03
