Ubuntu 18.04 LTS move to a 10 year support cycle - update official Ubuntu website.
Hello.
At OpenStack Summit in Berlin, Mr Mark Shuttleworth, Ubuntu founder, announced that the Canonical company will support Ubuntu 18.04 LTS for ten years (that's two times longer than the usual five years). So, it means Users will be receiving security and bug fixes updates until 2028. And because it's very important change, I think that such an information should be added on the official Ubuntu website (ubuntu.com) and different sections (see below). Here are some ideas, examples:
● Server: https:/
There is a short information: "Supported by Canonical until 2023". Now, it should be changed to something like: "Supported by Canonical until 2028 (started with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. Other LTS releases might also get an extended support.)" And so on.
● Desktop: https:/
In this section, we can read that "(...) And the long-term support releases give you five years of security patches and updates." It can be changed to something like: "And the long-term support releases give you - started with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS - ten years of security patches and updates (other LTS releases might also get an extended support)." But, that's only an example. Nothing more, nothing less.
● IoT: https:/
There can be a short informations about ten year support. For example:
"From home control to drones, robots and industrial systems, Ubuntu Core provides robust security (with 10 years of support*), app stores and reliable updates.
* Ubuntu 18.04 will now be supported for ten years".
And it's very important, because the 10-years support announcement for Ubuntu 18.04 is driven - among other things - by the needs of the IoT market etc.
So, here are some ideas and examples of changes, that - in my opinion - should be made on an official Ubuntu website. There is one more important thing to add: other LTS releases might also get an extended support.
Thanks, best regards.
