live cd - low memory check

Registered by ibob63

Hi,

On old computers, the live cd installation can fail due to insufficient memory (i.e. less than 500mb). This is information is not provided to user, who are often confronted with an installation which stalls/freezes/takes a long time for no apparent reason. Ubuntu should check the amount of available memory before attempting installation and provide a warning or use the swap file if the memory is too low.

Thanks,

James

Whiteboard

Even better than waiting for the installer would be to warn early in the boot process. I've seen machines take 20+ minutes to boot the Live CD because they just didn't have what it takes. Users should be warned before they get error dialogs as things time out and all hell breaks loose on their machine.
