Ubuntu Device Manager Request

Registered by DaveW

I would like to request a new feature for Hardy. I really think Ubuntu needs a true device manager, the restricted manager is not enough. Users should be able to go to a device manager with a simple interface, select a piece of hardware on the host and then see a list of available drivers. Then the user should be able to select which driver they want to use and be prompted with a warning if it is a binary driver. I think it would be a good idea to integrate some of the features of the restricted manager into this device manager but i believe this 1 feature is in a lot of cases holding back some people from switching over to linux.

Example: joe user wants to change from the open source audio driver he is using to a different driver the manufacturer creates. currently he'd have to edit several config files and probe the module to make it work. He should be able to go to the device manager, select sound card, then have a drop down list with whatever drivers are available and then an option for other where he can select this different driver. Then if there are any issues he can use the device manager to change back to his old driver.

Example 2: joe user has an Nvidia graphics card and wants to try out the 2d Nvidia driver, the Binary Nvidia driver and the Nouveau 3d driver but doesnt know how to edit his xorg.conf file. He can simply go to the device manager and select which driver and version of the driver he wants to use to get up and running. In this case he might see Nv Driver - 2d only, Nouveau Driver - experimental 3d driver, Nvidia Binary Driver - 96.39 closed source, Nvidia Binary Driver - 100.14.11 closed source, Other...
