Server boot and upstart

Registered by Duncan McGreggor

How do Upstart and planned changes affect server?

With 10.04 a lot of effort has been put into making booting a lot faster and generally prettier, although that's great for the desktop user, it might not always be ideal for a server/VM user.

In this session should be discussed improving the server and VM boot experience by for example:
 - Making serial ouput work properly with plymouth
 - Let a VM user go into grub (currently hard due to the very small delay where one can press shift)

Other server/vm specific boot improvements should be discussed there to make sysadmins' life easier with 10.10 without impacting our desktop users.

Whiteboard

Fix bug 552786: proper exit code for initctl status. This is important in order to be able monitor services correctly (monitoring frameworks, puppet).
