Discuss problems and solutions with the gnome/pulseaudio volume control

Switching from controlling ALSA to controlling PA in Gnome's volume control brings in a few regressions, e g for users running Jack, or not running PA at all for some reason. We also tell people quite often to go to alsamixer when ALSA volume controls don't behave the way PA expects them do. Just to have a starting point for the discussion, I'll suggest that we, when we bring up the g-v-c, detect whether PA is running or not. If it isn't, we display the ALSA volumes if it is, we display PA volumes with an "advanced" button that brings up ALSA volumes.
