Labelling and formatting of partitions

Registered by Martin Pitt

We propose a way or tool to format partitions with various file systems, including LUKS encryption support.

At the moment there is no GUI tool to change the label of a Linux file system, and no tool at all to change the label of a VFAT partition. We propose the design of the necessary backend support into UI agnostic infrastructure (hal) and the user interface integration into Gnome.

Whiteboard

pitti, 2007-11-13: Spec ready for review now, comments appreciated.

RFC sent to upstream, too: http://lists.freedesktop.org/archives/hal/2007-November/009888.html

pitti, 2007-11-16: upstream generally agrees to the concept, setting to pendingapproval

pitti, 2008-02-13: fsck usplash integration is in hardy now, except for checkroot.sh (which breaks with non-ext3, investigation in progress)
pitti, 2008-02-19: fsck usplash integration for checkroot.sh added, too.

pitti, 2008-12-15: renaming and creation of partitions is handled by devicekit-disks in the future, thus this is obsolete.
