We Menu - Bringing Community to the Desktop

Registered by Randall Ross on 2010-10-07

Problem: The modern desktop lacks an obvious (and inviting) way to discover and engage with one's community.

Proposed Solution: Create a prominent WeMenu as the focal point for community on the Ubuntu desktop. The WeMenu is a highly visible place containing persons and groups that are central to the Ubuntu experience and ethos. It is outward looking, but human centric. It focuses our attention on people, beginning with those closest to us.

Whiteboard

I love this idea. I'll gladly get the code started. I would envision this being something available from software center. Please elaborate on the kinds of functions that you envision this menu having. Note that it may be more appropriate to create an app that integrates with the message menu.

Declining for UDS-N, since we don't have the details to move forward. We can still work on this, but should have the discussion outside of UDS.

RR> Updated spec with additional details. Humbly suggesting we try to (briefly) discuss at UDS-N if at all possible. This can potentially help the “Developer Outreach and Education” track and energize more people (dev's and others) to get involved in Ubuntu if we can make the on-ramp to community more prominent.

rrnwexec (04.17.2011)> Proposing for UDS-O. Now that Unity is in place, we have an opportunity to revisit either as a Unity add-on, or as originally proposed: a sister menu to accompany the MeMenu.
