Ensure geoclue is maintainable in the distribution
• Inspect the package
• Configuration?
• Consumers?
* choose which providers to include by default
Available providers:
* geoclue-geonames
* geoclue-gpsd
* geoclue-gsmloc
* geoclue-gypsy
* geoclue-hostip
* geoclue-localnet
* geoclue-manual
* geoclue-plazes
* geoclue-skyhook
* geoclue-yahoo
* ubuntu-geoip
Providers to include:
* ubuntu-geoip
* ubuntu-geonames (not done yet)
Ideas:
* Perhaps avahi service so a host on a local network could advertise it provides geoip
* Added configuration settings for the host to do the lookup
* Package the server side script for others to use
* NetworkManager "zones"
* Make the server entry a list
* experiment more with libchamplain, and consider moving it to main in natty+1
* Zeitgeist is looking at adding location awareness to events
Concerns:
* ubuntu-geoip IS scalability
* display maps from google or osm via libchamplain
* can osm support the traffic?
Testing:
* ubuntu-geoip as a service is pretty well tested, it is already used in the installer
* testing it as a geoclue service, we need get it into the natty early and get users testing it with indicator-datetime, with a test case on http://
Work items:
[ted] create ubuntu-geonames:
[ken-vandine] ubuntu-geonames package upload and MIR:
[rick-rickspencer3] map display in gwibber:
[magicfab] community participation to improve osm mapping:
Old natty WIs:
[ken-vandine] submit RT ticket to IS to beef up infrastructure: DONE
[ken-vandine] upload ubuntu-geoip: DONE
[ken-vandine] contact osm about scaling concerns: DONE
2010-08-11, seb128: what is ubuntu-geonames? Is that something that needs to land in the distribution? If that's the case you should have work items about it. Is there any testing plan to make sure the geoip provider is used and working correctly?
2010-08-11, ken-vandine: seb128, hopefully I answered your questions above in the whiteboard under testing and work items.
2011-02-08, ken-vandine: OSM has limited resources, their suggestion for us would be to host our own OSM server. Details at http://
2011-04-27, pitti: Retargetting for oneiric, and setting postponed WIs back to todo.
pitti, 2011-07-21: Untargetting for oneiric, no progress here and no time.
