Ubuntu GNOME default package management software

Registered by Tim Lunn

For R we should decide if want to stick with gnome software installer, or revert back to the standard ubuntu management software. While the gnome-software-manager does provide a more pure GNOME experience, it is also lacking in features and has some issues such as broken system integration (probably due to other ubuntu patches), and I suspect won't support dist-upgrades.

So either we need to fix the above issues or look at the alternatives. Ubuntu software centre is probably never going to fit in well with GNOME desktop. Synaptic and update-manager possibly good provide a good option, that is full-featured, well integrated and won't look to out of place amongst our pure GNOME desktop.
