Adding new PCI IDs without requiring a kernel update

Registered by Matt Zimmerman on 2006-11-08

Currently, we must update the entire kernel in order to add a new PCI ID to a driver. Instead, we should provide a simple facility which takes advantage of the capabilities of the PCI subsystem to register new IDs without changing the kernel module.

Whiteboard

- ship a mapping of PCI IDs to modules

- enhance depmod to pick up these new PCI IDs and include them in modules.pcimap

- add install hook to modprobe config to echo to newid

- Not the correct way to handle this. Jockey may implement some of this functionality one day.
- create simple package which ships the necessary configuration and the PCI ID database
