fancy dual booting

Registered by mistone

For someone who knows nothing about computers at all , or someone like me who really likes design and fancy stuff, the simple grub interface and even gfxboot just doesn't cut it. My idea is to make something like boot camp where you can choose from 2 or 3 really huge icons on the screen to what OS you want to boot. Having people choose between different kernels and if they want to have a memory test is ridiculous for someone who knows nothing about Linux. Not only that but in order to edit the list you have edit a config file... This could also allow usb and firewire devices that are bootable to show up ( again, like boot camp )

At this point its just an idea. I plan on doing research on how this could be done. Having a small loading period before being able to choose which OS I think would be acceptable.

Depending on the implimation , I think it would be acceptable if older machines "degraded" back to grub, as long as the kernel options and memory tests were taken out, or find a way to make grub even simpler.

It should also be included in the specifications for https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/slick-boot

This is an interesting idea -- grub isn't as pretty as it could be. However, I disagree with the idea of using OpenGL this early in the boot process. I'm all for eye candy, but eye candy at boot time should not come at the cost of speed. -- Jeremy

Ok , not using openGL is fine, I was just saying the kind of effects I wanted. When I said "ideally" what I meant was if I could choose how to draw a fancy GUI, thats what I would choose, not necessarily the most ideal for the project. I agree, speed should be a proitory. Although yea, its eyecandy, but the idea would to make it more functional and accessible to the average user.
