Improved thumbnails in nautilus

Registered by Atanas Atanasov

I noticed that nautilus supports thumbnails but not at its best. Here are a few ideas:

1. It should be possible to turn off the thumbnail support, especially if the size is too small or there are too many files in the folder. I would prefer to see folder contents quickly instead of wait for thumbnails. Thumbnails are a huge hog in folders with a large amount of files (I tested about 10000+ text files for example).

2. When copying files thumbnails should be preserved. e.g. I copied a folder with about 100 photos. When I enter nautilus starts rebuilding all thumnails from scratch provided I freshly copied the whole folder.

3. There should be some settings to set the thumbnail rebuilding capabilities of nautilus i.e. when and where. I would prefer if nautilus builds thumbnails for my home folder and subcontents when the system is idle.

Whiteboard

2009-01-06 pitti: I declined the proposal for Jaunty. In order to be considered a Jaunty goal, this needs to be drafted first. Please create a specification, link it to this blueprint, and set it to 'review'. Thanks!

2009-01-07 thenasko: I would not mind writing down my ideas in form of a specification. How can I create a wiki page? Are there instructions somewhere?

2009-01-07 pitti:
 - Why and How for specifications: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SpecSpec
 - General wiki help: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HelpOnEditing
 - You should take a look at existing examples on e. g. https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty (the approved ones) for how a specification should look like. Please use the "SpecTemplate" if you create such a page. After it's created, please put the wiki URL into the "Edit title and summary" URL line.
Thanks!

2009-01-08 thenasko: The added a first version of the specification. Please let me know.
