Meta-Link system-wide

Registered by John Bradley Bulsterbaum

There's a similar (but not same) proposal about using Metalink for ISO downloads. I ran-across metalink a couple days ago too and found it very interesting: currently I run mostly Windows (because setting-up compiz on Dapper killed Ubuntu) and there is, already, download-managers for it using Metalink!

This is a good piece of technology and I think it ought to make its way into the Ubuntu system: not just for Isos, but rather into the system to be used by the browsers, by OpenOffice (which I think already uses it anyways), mediaplayers, and etc. The other spec (for ISOs) is located at: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/metalink-iso-downloads and a beta is already available. If this work is applicable could it be applied to the system?

By the way, the homepage of this project (which should be checked-out) is http://www.metalinker.org/
