Kernel selection at upgrade work would also fix the issues with dapper->hardy->intrepid-><later> as reported here:

TheMuso: Have thoughts on the administrative overhead of ports kernels been heard by the kernel team? I am enclined to agree with the kernel team on ports being a separate package, due to some good points raised in the spec.

rtg: TheMuso - The archive admins expressed a strong preference to pull the ports back into linux-image. I guess I'm willing to give it a try for Karmic, but I'm not intending to do the patch work to reintegrate those configurations. Furthermore, I'll not allow any ports work to adversely affect or delay the production of the distro kernel. Ports FTBSs will have to wait until the next upload. Does that seem reasonable to you?

TheMuso; Thats fine by me. The reintegration I am working on will also hopefully set things up in such a way that you can do your work without worrying about ports. And FWIW, I was neither for nor against the ports being reintegrated, I was happy either way, so it seems its the archive admins who want things differently.
