389 Directory Server Inclusion in Karmic

Registered by Qichang Liang on 2009-06-12

A usable and flexible directory server is a requirement for Ubuntu to fulfill certain positions in the server market. Fedora Directory Server (http://directory.fedoraproject.org/) would be a great start. OpenLDAP is nice, but lacks many of the features of FDS. Of these are ActiveDirectory replication (a great way to help businesses migrate from Windows to Linux or integrate Linux servers in a Windows environment), four-way multimaster replication (far more flexible than OpenLDAP or AD), easy setup and maintanence and more. All this and it still uses LDAP so existing LDAP tools will work with it and it can still replicate to OpenLDAP servers. Therefore we should aim at including Fedora Directory Server in Karmic, the release before the next LTS release.

FDS is also GPL licensed. It may be in our interest to rename the package in order to guarentee ourselves the ability to patch/hack/modify the software without anyones pants getting tied in a knot over trademarks (see mozilla).

2009-06-10: Fedora Directory Server 1.2 has already been packaged and now sitting on REVU

packages:

Please review and approve these packages so that Fedora Directory server can be included in Karmic

2007-05-06: Initial packaging work is underway on the 1.1 branch, which uses autotools & is FHS-compliant.

2007-09-12: the next release will use "dirsrv" as autotool package name (so also in paths etc.), maybe use this as .deb package name also ? (pixelpapst)

Whiteboard

According to http://directory.fedoraproject.org/wiki/389_Change_FAQ all references to this server and packages built for it should be renamed to 389. This happened as of sometime May. I think their FAQ explains the history and issues well and we should accept the upstream's request in this matter.

2012-10-24 tjaalton: 389ds is included since 12.04.
