pitti, 2010-10-18: I'm not sure what this is about. Ubuntu already does very few things only to configure "hardware". The most prominent examples are /etc/fstab for the partitioning, grub configuration for where to find the boot loader etc., and in some cases the installation of some additional proprietary drivers like broadcom-wl or the NVidia drivers. But none of those limit running Ubuntu from an USB stick on different machines -- I do that very often in fact. So perhaps you can clarify the description here?
