Easily-updatable USB image for hardware testing

Why don't people test preview releases for hardware compatibility? Simple: they don't want to wreck their machines. This could be circumvented fairly easily with a live disk image that could be placed on a USB key. Booting into that would allow for non-destructive, yet effective hardware testing. If the image could easily be updated on a daily basis, then potential fixes could be tested very quickly. I think the best way to implement this would be to put a full installation in the disk image, letting updates occur through the usual channels. However, for the sake of avoiding cruft, it should be easy to update the image to a pristine recent version.
