GUI Terminal

Registered by Ubuntudoc

Linux has used the Command Line, or Terminal for Ubuntu's case, since the dawn of existence. It is time someone took the Terminal and made it into a user friendly interface, GUI. One of the largest complaints from new users is the use of the command line, not everybody wants to relive MS DOS. I am not proposing to get rid of the strict Command line interface, but to give others an option to build from it for an easier experience. A benefiting learning curve of the Command Line will be a positive result from this idea.

Essentially create two options, "Command Line" and "GUI Command Line".

GUI Command Line would show tabs (Programming, Administrator, Directory, etc.) to display what category of commands the user wants to use. Under these categories, are basic text buttons (make, sudo, ls, etc.) to click and will input commands. Also, to avoid confusion, if one hovered their mouse cursor over the button, a brief description of what that command is used for displays. However, when you clicked on the command button, it would enter that text command in the Command Prompt below.

Note: The title “GUI Command Line” is a bit misleading, but derives the best explanation. Command Prompt still is viewed below the command button GUI panel.

There we have it, a simple GUI Terminal for the average user. The average user now, also, will learn to grow with the Command Line rather than be confused or possibly scared to use it.

Additional Note: In the future, programmers can build from this or even embed simple graphic symbols next to text to help identify the command button. Or even for a more future build, make it possible for a third feature, “Full GUI Command Prompt”, where the command prompt is not viewed.

GUI Command Line would provide a new era of Terminals, not just Ubuntu. It will also begin the start for users not required to memorize commands before actually being able to use the terminal that was strictly for advanced users.
