Detecting hardware on boot

Registered by Garyu

Ubuntu usually works great after installation. However, many people at one time or another do something to bork the system so things stop working. Sometimes, it may be difficult to restore the system. But it always works to reinstall the system, even though it takes a lot of time.

I would like to suggest that the GRUB bootloader gets a new option, other than failsafe and so on. So it is possible to do a autodetect and/or reinstall hardware support the same way it is done on live-cd's and on installation. That way it would be heaps easier to restore a system that is partly broken.
