when the gnome trash is open, clicking on the trash applet should close it instead of opening a second trash window

When I click on the Trash Applet (v. 2.20.0 in Ubuntu 7.10) twice, I end up with two Trash windows. Clicking X times opens X Trash windows.
Why does the applet not alternate between showing and hiding the trash window?
It would be a lot better if a first click on the Trash icon would open the trash window and a second click would hide it. It seems a lot more intuitive to me...
