Securely Wipe Trash

Registered by Sindhudweep Sarkar

Secure erasing must be simple and easy to use. The gnome-trash applet should include a simple easy way to configure the default empty trash to be a secure wipe, or have it as an additional option in the right click menu. In addition, appropriate steps need to be taken to ensure such a secure deletion works properly on journaled file systems.

See the "shred" command-line command for background (in ubuntu by default).
But the journaling issue, and other difficulties, are discussed here:

and RAID and NFS cache issues here:

The "srm" package from MOTU, based on "Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory", is an excellent package that should be installed by default to run secure delete. It also installs a binary to wipe memory, swap a to free a disk. Read the manual on 'srm' for more information on RAID and NFS as well. -brettalton
The package is actually called 'secure-delete' and the binary is 'srm'. How easily can this be added to the right-click menu of the trash can (or individual files)? -brettalton
