Create a standard way to close apps such that the state is saved (ie fine grained hibernation)

Registered by Daniel Hollocher

Currently, hibernation (if it works) saves the state of your whole computer. I would like to be able to do the same thing, but for individual programs. I propose a standard key combination (maybe like alt+f4 or ctrl+del) as the interface. Thus, one could just hit the key combo, and a program would close, saving its state (however the program sees fit). There would be some other way to reopen the program... Some examples: Firefox implements this when it crashes. Transmission, the bittorrent manager, already saves its state when it's closed (at least from my perspective, it saves all your torrents, and remembers which were running). It would be great if text editors saved what file was open, and where my cursor was located, etc.
