Edubuntu Incorporate Features from K12LTSP Hacks

Registered by Matt Oquist

K12LTSP includes some scripts in /opt/ltsp/templates/k12linux that the system administrator can run at her discretion. Edubuntu should include the features provided by these scripts when possible, and some documentation of these features should be available when necessary.

Whiteboard

The scripts from Karoshi Linux would likely prove more useful as they have already been adapted from K12LTSP and others and provide:
 Web Management
 Server/Network Management
 Shared Student and Staff Areas
 Secure Student and Staff Areas
 Bulk User Creation
 Wake on LAN
 Profile Management
 Kixtart Logins
 Software Deployment
 Room Booking
 Help Centre
 Asset Register
 Multimedia Storage and Access
 Website
 eGroupWare
 VLE/Online Classroom
 WebMail
 Home Access
 Room Internet Banning
 Website Cache
 Internet Blocking
 Internet Logging
 Online Library
 LTSP thin clients
 Windows clients

Although the current version is designed for PCLinuxOS the scripts available already provide some support for Ubuntu.
The setup provides for a "single server install" similar to current Edubuntu installs as well as the ability to configure multiple server types including:
 Authentication/PDC Server
 File Servers
 Proxy Server
 Web Server
 Print Server
 Backup Server
 Media Studies Specialist Server
 Server Monitoring Server
 LTSP Servers

Karoshi is designed to provide a seamless system throughout the school,
Karoshi is very flexible, but you don't have to run everything it has to offer,
Simple Web GUI allows staff to teach/innovate without thinking about the server,
The Karoshi project is not written with Linux experts in mind, but computing/networking knowledge is needed.
The range of management tools can be adapted to establishments other than schools.
