Easily Cutomizable Visual Effects

Registered by John

This blueprint is concerned with user experience and usability. Essentially, the idea is to always have a 'custom' button available in the 'Visual Effects' tab of Appearance Preferences. This button would (if pressed for the first time) trigger the installation of ccsm and ccsm-simple. This allows any user to easily create the stunning Compiz effects seen all over YouTube, without the hasstle of searching for the correct packages through the Software Centre.

I believe you need to re-examine your scope. CCSM has way too many gears to be recommended for the average user. A simple configuration applet with maybe 10 things to configure would be more desirable and could even get in the default install. It would basically just be an easy interface to the settings the Unity developes already made customizable in gconf/dconf.

You should take a look at gnome-control-center 3 (Install Fedora 15 on a spare partition if you have to). The applet should fit in there. Put together a mockup and find someone that can code it in C or Vala and you can probably succeed in this.
