One quick and big comment shotwell does video too and they are handled in a similar way in the UI so there would be some dodginess there.
It really wouldnt be hard to create a web interface for displaying all shared image files but doing it in a way users would use is the interesting thing.
So the way I see it is we have 2 prospective use cases for this galleries and singular photos and both use cases have to be dealt with. So for an image just pick any image site like this http://twitpic.com/4ll63v but without the adverts obviously just display the users publicly shared pics and maybe display their previous public pictures and allow some navigation. So we can either do this for every single picture in the gallery for multiple uploads at one time or we can do something cooler. I have an apple style idea using CSS transitions http://css3.bradshawenterprises.com/slide1/ so the user can flick through their library picture by picture and it would be pretty striking to look at.

So either we can have a static 1 image per page for everything including galleries or we can have galleries as a separate entity and have something cool there that would add a little bit of magic to looking through your photos online.
