Automatic Desktop Icon Organization
In addition to the current "Clean Up by Name" and "Keep Aligned" options one has when right-clicking on the desktop, one should also have an "Auto-arrange" option. An option of right-justified disks and left-justified files and directories should be presented in addition to arranging by name.

In Feisty, selecting "Clean Up by Name" seems to order the discs ahead of the folders, which is pretty much just as good. However, I think it may still be nice to have other options like organizing horizontally. -Charles Edward Pax
Personally, I'd like the ability to specify an area of the desktop in which icons should not be automatically placed unless there is no room elsewhere. For example, the wallpaper I'm currently using is very wide and not very tall, and so leaves blank areas on the top and bottom of my screen. I know I can put my icons there manually, but I'd prefer it to be automatic. -James R. Dearing
