Better desktop CD language support

Registered by Timo Jyrinki on 2007-05-08

We should find a way to provide better language support on the desktop CDs. Currently the selection of languages on the CD is limited and varies from release to release. For most languages the desktop CD UI is in English always, regardless of if something else was chosen. Modifications to have better language selector/downloader, and usage of LZMA or rzip for SquashFS are being considered to resolve the problem to both those that have Internet connection (language packs can be downloaded on startup) and those that do not (more language packs to fit on the CD).

Whiteboard

Drafting, needs participators (please mention if you are going to work on one or another aspect related to this spec). A meeting was held at Sevilla, mainly concentrating on SquashFS.

Update @ 8.04 LTS: A few points have improved, mainly language selection being offered by default when booting from the CD. LZMA support is now in dpkg, but live CD does not use it. Downloading / guiding to download language support has not yet improved.

Update @ 9.04: Post-install helping now finally works, and is preferred to offering connecting to Internet pre-install. DVD:s nowadays have all the langpacks, meaning DVD experience is flawless. This means the remaining problem is the live usage of Ubuntu from a CD in non-English languages.
