auto-start at boot

One of the features I miss in the 7.04 distro is an easy way to have programs started up on boot without having to type your password, e.g. for starting up a firewall at boot up. I know one can accomplish this in "Sessions" (and still have to type a password), but isn't there an easier way to go about this?
