Ubuntu Configurations for Raspberry Pi and Other Emerging ARM Platforms

Registered by Michael Schloh

Being that the Raspberry Pi hardware platform has recently released, it's likely that many will install Ubuntu on this device. Researching use cases for Ubuntu on Raspberry Pi in advance and anticipating common question on AskUbuntu.com or elsewhere indirectly adds value to many fledgling Ubuntu projects and efforts like mobility, Unity, touch gesture design, ARM configuration management, and migration of heavyweight KDE and Gnome apps. For this reason, this proposal is categorized as hardware but concerns other Ubuntu development categories like design, community, or foundations as well.

This blueprint targets developers interested in seeing the marriage of Ubuntu and Raspberry Pi succeed in the most appealing way. Developers are invited to share ideas and answer questions in advance to what is expected on AskUbuntu.com. Vertical configurations like Ubuntu TV will be discussed as well, judging from the very relevant use case of Linux TV on small and cheap ARM architecture.

Other ARM hardware platforms may supplant current interest in the Raspberry Pi device. Candidates include the Pandaboard, although there seems to be less interest in most candidates.

Whiteboard

[ogra, 2012-05-03] please note https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/848154 where a discussion about the RPi already took place, unless canonical finds someone to pay for the port or a big usersbase steps up to take responsibility to maintain an armv6 port, support for the RPi is very unlikely to happen in ubuntu.
