3d-direct-rendering-detection-and-setup

Registered by reh4c

This specification is recommended based on two related bugs on 3D direct rendering infrastructure (DRI) that I've reported. Bug #13287 proposes a 3D/DRI testing module to be included in the hwdb-client package. Also, bug #34590 explains my trouble in setting up DRI for an ATI Rage Mobility P/M video chip. My hardware is detected properly by Ubuntu, but I must change the color depth and run several packages to get some basic DRI. Can the detection and setup processes be improved to avoid issues like this? Also, since the hwdb-client tool seems to be quite useful, is there any possibility of including it or making it optional for use in the initial Ubuntu installation? Finally, I think this specification ties in directly with 3d-acceleration-notification-utility proposed by erimar77. I think my specification takes the process a step or two further. Oliver-please don't be upset that I used your name as the assignee (taken from the hwdb-client bug report). Thanks.
