actually the problem here is just that ddcprobe's being non-specifically dumb.
only using the second-highest resolution for crts is obviously a design
decision, which I stand by utterly.
so, the options are:
a) just reverse that design decision and ignore the fact that lcds are seen as crts
b) attempt to identify every desktop lcd ever made as an lcd by id number
c) work out why lcds are seen as crts, fix that
